Pruning Clinic by Extension Coordinator

Pruning Clinic with Eric BarretThe MVLNA hosted a pruning clinic free to MVLNA members at Colonial Gardens in Vienna. Eric Barrett from the OSU Extension Office (Mahoning County) presented to the group of about 15 members on pruning for maximum flower potential, minimizing disease, and making great shapes for the landscapes. In this session, they reviewed proper tools, techniques, and other information needed to get the best results.

This was no sit back and watch type of clinic. Eric was eager to get everyone involved and do hands-on pruning. The group tackled a cluster of arborvitaes, a hedge of Taxus, and many other trees and shrubs on the property. He showed the group how to pull back mulch, and then cut back the roots to prevent stem girdling roots, how to prune hedges so they are wider at the base than at the top to allow all parts to receive sunlight and prevent legginess, how to make 3-cuts to avoid tearing the bark on larger branches, and much, much more.

There will be more of these 3-hour pruning clinics in the near future. Please watch for these clinics and take advantage of these pruning sessions. They are interactive, hands-on and you will walk away with more knowledge than you came with!
